From Kuching to global runways, designer Dickson Lim explores the tension between discipline and desire in his Spring/Summer ’27 collection.&nbsp;

Few design balance acts are as tricky as the tightrope between impulse and discipline. For Malaysian tailoring wunderkind Dickson Lim, that exact tension is the beating heart of his Spring/Summer 2027 collection: Restraint &amp; Desire. Known for dissecting traditional suits and reassembling them with surgical precision, Lim steps into SS27 asking a surprisingly existential question: How do we decide what stays and what goes? Rather than chasing complexity for a quick visual fix, Lim forced every seam, lapel, and line to justify its existence on the cutting table. The result is a masterclass in deliberate design. A push-and-pull where minimalist restraint meets the seductive itch to over-engineer. From the razor-sharp geometry of a red asymmetrical collar to the mind-bending architecture of the Rift Blazer and an unforgettable finale look, Lim pushes his pattern-making into entirely uncharted territory. We sat down with the designer to talk choice, craftsmanship, and how he turned internal creative chaos into his most refined collection yet.

Malaysian high fashion has evolved rapidly on the global stage. How do you see your work redefining what "Malaysian Design" looks like globally, and what responsibility do you feel toward steering the local tailoring narrative? I wouldn’t necessarily define my work as "Malaysian design." To me, it’s purely about creative expression and having the freedom to build what excites me. I don’t feel a duty to steer a specific narrative, either. I’m simply trying to create work that pushes the boundaries of tailoring and gives people a fresh perspective. At the same time, I hope my journey makes Malaysians proud. Coming from Kuching and reaching an international stage proves that where you come from doesn’t limit how far you can go. When my work receives global recognition, I don’t view it as just my moment. I see it as a Malaysian moment, too. We live in an era dominated by hyper-speed digital trends, AI, and mass production. How do you protect the slow, methodical art of tailoring while keeping your brand at the bleeding edge? Digital trends and AI are tools to adapt to, but what can never be replaced is authenticity. That’s what sets the brand apart. I’m the person behind the label, and what I create is deeply human, built around connection, emotion, hard work, and determination. People often tell me they feel emotional watching my shows because they feel the effort poured into every stitch. Technology simply can't replicate that. For me, staying relevant isn’t about chasing every trend. It’s about staying authentic, pushing yourself to learn, and trusting your direction.

Your runway collections feature sharp structural shifts and avant-garde details. How do you translate the raw energy of these "Restraint &amp; Desire" showpieces into wearable garments for private clients? I actually don’t simplify the showpieces for private clients, because they usually want the runway piece exactly as it is. DICKSON LIM clients are bold, fearless, and unapologetically themselves. They come to me for expressive, razor-sharp tailoring, not something toned down. They already have a clear vision of how they want to present themselves, and my role is to bring that to life. If they wanted something conventional, there are plenty of other brands they could go to. Achieving international acclaim at a young age requires relentless discipline. What does your routine look like preparing for a major show, and how do you balance rigid execution with creative freedom? I always hold a very clear vision in my head, and every single day is about taking a step toward it. I want people to feel something, so a fashion show is never just about the clothes. I’m simultaneously directing the looks, music, visuals, theatrics, and digital content. I naturally multitask, so during fashion week, everything moves at hyper-speed. It gets stressful, but I lock in and give it everything. At the same time, I’ve learned to find balance. When you genuinely love what you’re doing, the heavy lifting doesn't really feel like work.

Looking back at your growth from your early debuts to this collection, what is one design rule you used to religiously follow that you now take joy in completely breaking? I used to religiously adhere to making each design in just one single colour. Now, if I love a piece, I’ll construct it in multiple colour ways. Colour completely alters how a garment is perceived and felt. I’ve realised a single idea doesn’t have to be limited to one angle. I’m always open to seeing things differently, and that evolution is right there on the runway.
