Through a combination of strategic planning,&nbsp;astute analysis and a firm understanding of risk, Kay Mustaffa is steadily amassing wealth.

Truism: the fundamentals of personal finance are hardly ever taught in a classroom. More often, they arrive through experience: That instinct not to wait too long before asking for advice and the early realisation that security is seldom as solid as adults make it sound. For the investor and principal of Singapore-based Primevest Kairos Capital VCC, Kay Mustaffa, the lesson came early. Wealth, he learned, must first be protected before it can be pursued. Rather than giving anxiety any chance of festering, he turned it into a discipline. His understanding of risk feels almost radical in its approach within a financial realm that encourages audacity and the spectacle of enormous stakes. Risk, he says, shouldn't rise from the question of how much one can gain but a more practical one: what needs to be preserved? Driven by his realisation of the importance of patience, Kay's unwavering intention is to craft a sustainable strategy that will outlive the present and not to be led by unnecessary risks and emotional panic. To put it simply, Kay's approach prioritises reason and caution over impulse.&nbsp;
In our interview, he explains the determination that motivated him to invest and why the most powerful form of control can be knowing when not to act.

Who is Kay Mustaffa when the suit comes off and the&nbsp;meetings are done?
&nbsp;Quieter than people expect. The version of me that marketers see is decisive, because the work demands it, but at home, I am mostly a listener. I read a great deal, often things that have nothing to do with finance: history, the occasional biography, whatever helps me understand why people do what they do. I value quality time with family, often over meals, and with a small circle of friends who have been part of my life through ordinary moments. I think the suit is a kind of discipline, a way of showing respect for other people's time and money. When it comes off, what remains is someone fairly ordinary who is curious about the world and tries not to take himself too seriously.

People are trained to sound self-assured especially in the&nbsp;field of finance. What has taught you to be more careful with&nbsp;certainty?
The markets, mostly. Anyone who has spent enough time&nbsp;close to them learns humility, often the hard way. Certainty&nbsp;can be reassuring to project, but it is dangerous to believe too&nbsp;completely. I have seen very intelligent people be confidently&nbsp;wrong, and I have been wrong myself. What I try to practise&nbsp;now is conviction without arrogance: to hold a clear view&nbsp;with discipline, while leaving room for the possibility that the&nbsp;world may know something I do not. I would rather be honest about uncertainty than sound impressive and be mistaken.

Since investor relations is about trust before numbers, what do&nbsp;you think makes someone trust you with their capital?
Consistency between what I say and what I do. Trust, in my experience, is rarely won in a single conversation; it is built through small moments where I choose the careful thing over the convenient one. I try to be the same person in a difficult market as I am in an easy one. I tell people what I do not know as readily as what I do. And I am careful never to intertwine someone else’s capital with our own ambition. People can feel the difference between someone selling to them and someone genuinely thinking congruently with them, and over time, that difference is what made the investment community develop the trust in us.

How do you make a conversation feel honest when dealingwith UHNWIs and people who are more than familiar with&nbsp;polished pitches?
By not pitching. The people I speak with have heard every polished presentation imaginable, and they can detect performance instantly. So, I do the opposite I explain it in layman’s terms, no excessive jargon, I name the limitations of what we do, and I am comfortable saying that a particular approach may not be suited for them. Honesty, oddly, is disarming in this world precisely because it is rare. I find that when you are willing to talk to someone out of something, they finally believe you when you talk about what you actually believe in.

What kind of investor teaches you the most?
The skeptical ones. The investor who asks questions&nbsp;beyond the headline number and wants to truly understand&nbsp;the underlying mechanism makes me more discerning and&nbsp;meticulous. I have learnt the most from people who are not&nbsp;easily impressed, because they force me to articulate ideas I may&nbsp;not yet have fully examined. The agreeable investor is pleasant;&nbsp;the demanding one makes you better. I hold deep respect for&nbsp;anyone who&nbsp;approaches their own capital with that degree of care and seriousness.

The fund charges performance fees only above a hurdle rate and&nbsp;uses a high-water mark. What does that structure say about fairness&nbsp;between manager and investor?
It reflects a simple principle: We should be rewarded for creating genuine value, not merely for being present. A hurdle&nbsp;rate ensures that investors receive a defined return before any&nbsp;performance fee is earned, while a high-water mark prevents amanager from being paid twice for simply recovering previously&nbsp;lost ground. Together, these mechanisms place manager and&nbsp;investor on the same side of the table: We do well only when&nbsp;they do well, and not before. To me, a fee structure reveals more&nbsp;about a manager’s character than any presentation can. Ours is&nbsp;designed so that fairness is embedded in the architecture, rather than left to goodwill.

The fund has no lock-up period, even though it is positioned for&nbsp;mid to long-term investors. Why was that flexibility important?
Because trust should never have to be enforced by a contract.&nbsp;The strategy is built for investors who understand patience, and I&nbsp;am candid about its mid-to-long-term orientation. Still, I would&nbsp;rather investors remain because they believe in the discipline, not&nbsp;because they are constrained by structure. Removing the lock-up&nbsp;creates a healthy accountability: We must continue to earn the&nbsp;relationship, not simply secure it at the outset. There is, to us, a&nbsp;quiet dignity in giving people the freedom to exit their investment&nbsp;exposure when they choose. In my experience, that very flexibility&nbsp;often strengthens commitment rather than weakens it.

Algorithms can be disciplined while people are emotional. How&nbsp;do you talk to investors when the model makes a judgement that they&nbsp;may not be comfortable with?
I bring the conversation back to first principles. Discomfort&nbsp;often arises when the model’s inference cuts against the&nbsp;prevailing market sentiment — remaining invested when fear&nbsp;is dominant, or reducing exposure when optimism becomes&nbsp;excessive. In those moments, my role is not to defend the&nbsp;algorithm, but to explain the discipline behind it: the model&nbsp;is designed to introduce consistency, reduce behavioural bias,&nbsp;and prevent decisions from becoming hostage to the emotion&nbsp;of the day, including my own. I never dismiss an investor’s&nbsp;discomfort; it is human, and it is valid. But I try to reframe it&nbsp;through the lens of model governance and judgement. What&nbsp;may feel counterintuitive in the moment is often precisely&nbsp;where a disciplined investment framework earns its value. The&nbsp;model can inform the decision, but the final choice to remain&nbsp;invested must always rest with the investor.

When you think about the next phase of your career, what would&nbsp;you want people to say you helped build, beyond a fund?
That we helped shape a higher standard for how this work is done in our part of the world: one defined by rigour, honesty, and a quiet excellence that does not need to announce itself. A fund&nbsp;is ultimately a vehicle; what matters more is the culture built&nbsp;around it. We would like to have contributed to institutions&nbsp;that endure beyond any one person, and to a community of&nbsp;investors, partners, and younger talent who hold themselves to&nbsp;that same standard.&nbsp;If people one day say that Primevest Kairos Capital has helped&nbsp;raise the bar for how serious capital is managed by this region,&nbsp;and did so with integrity, that would mean far more to us than any single figure on a factsheet.

&nbsp;Beyond the fund, you have spoken about building a community.&nbsp;What is Le Cercle?
Le Cercle by Primevest Kairos Capital is something we have&nbsp;wanted to build for some time: a small, invitation-only circle&nbsp;for individuals who think seriously about capital preservation,&nbsp;culture, and legacy. It is deliberately not a marketing exercise, nor&nbsp;a platform to sell anything. It is, in essence, a room for considered&nbsp;conversation among peers who rarely have the space to speak&nbsp;freely and thoughtfully with one another. We are seeding it&nbsp;quietly, beginning with this collaboration with L’Officiel, and&nbsp;allowing it to grow by invitation, trust, and shared values rather&nbsp;than by scale. If it becomes what we hope it can be, Le Cercle&nbsp;will stand as a lasting community of ideas: one aligned with the&nbsp;spirit of Primevest Kairos Capital, yet strong enough to develop an identity of its own.

You work across several ventures. How do they fit together?
They are different expressions of the same instinct: to buildwith intention, discipline, and care. Primevest Kairos Capital is where that instinct is applied to institutional investing, through&nbsp;a framework defined by rigour, stewardship, and long-term&nbsp;perspective. Fundtir reflects a parallel interest in structure,&nbsp;governance, and cross-border stewardship. MLCA, our creative&nbsp;agency, exists because we believe ideas deserve to be communicated&nbsp;with as much care as they are conceived; its philosophy, fittingly,&nbsp;is simply to “make it work.” Each venture operates, yet they&nbsp;share a common temperament: patience, precision, and a refusal&nbsp;to cut corners. We have never been interested in building for&nbsp;scale alone. What interests us is building a way of working that remains consistent across everything we intercept.
