Fresh off the release of their latest&nbsp;single, Bersuara, featuring Yonnyboii, the trio is proving that&nbsp;their sound &mdash; part punk, part poetic, fully INSOMNIACKS&nbsp;&mdash; is both unmistakable and uncontainable. From humble&nbsp;school-stage beginnings to sold out concerts in Malaysia and&nbsp;Singapore, Iqie, Dan, and Iskandar have built more than just&nbsp;a band; they&rsquo;ve cultivated a brotherhood, a sound, and a loyal&nbsp;fanbase known as MANIACKS that champions them every&nbsp;step of the way. For a band that once had to beg their label to give Pulang a&nbsp;chance, only for it to become a defining hit, INSOMNIACKS&nbsp;has never been about following trends. It&rsquo;s about trusting their&nbsp;instincts, experimenting fearlessly, and delivering music that&nbsp;resonates as open-ended, emotional, and unapologetically&nbsp;theirs. From their formative YouTube days covering songs to&nbsp;channelling musical theatre&rsquo;s emotive discipline, every note,&nbsp;lyric, and performance is steeped in intention. This isn&rsquo;t just a story about a band that found its sound; it&rsquo;s&nbsp;about the evolution of artists who refused to compromise their&nbsp;vision, who embraced mistakes as part of the creative process,&nbsp;and who continue to redefine what it means to be modern&nbsp;musicians in a rapidly shifting industry.

L&rsquo;OFFICIEL HOMMES (LOH): Hello, gentlemen. Thank you for taking your time to sit down for this interview.&nbsp;
IQIE: No, man. Thank you for having us. ISKANDAR: Yes, we&rsquo;re excited for this. LOH: So, how is everybody doing lately? IQIE: Pretty much okay. We&rsquo;ve been busy prepping for our next&nbsp;gig and putting together our album. Other than that, it&rsquo;s&nbsp;smooth sailing. LOH: Good to know. Ok, let&rsquo;s get into it. Your latest single, "Bersuara"&nbsp;featuring Yonnyboii, was released at midnight today (6 February&nbsp;2026). Can you tell us how this collaboration came about? IQIE: We first talked about this song two years ago. It had&nbsp;always been at the back of our minds. One day, we felt it was&nbsp;finally time to work on it. Yonnyboii had been wanting to try a&nbsp;punk rock track for quite a while, and at that time, we were in&nbsp;the mood to do something punk rock too. He mentioned that&nbsp;he felt a bit too comfortable with where he was musically and&nbsp;wanted to try something new. We played around with a few&nbsp;tunes here and there, and that&rsquo;s how the song came together. LOH: How do you find the balance between&nbsp;INSOMNIACKS and&nbsp;Yonnyboii in "Bersuara"? ISKANDAR: I feel like the sound of Bersuara is very&nbsp;INSOMNIACKS, and Yonnyboii has a tone that fits perfectly&nbsp;with the vibe we wanted for the song. It wasn&rsquo;t very hard for&nbsp;us to find the balance between the two of us. If anything, it all&nbsp;felt very natural. LOH: I&rsquo;d like to take you back to before the beginning of&nbsp;INSOMNIACKS. How did you get involved in the music scene? IQIE: My family comes from a musical background. My late&nbsp;grandfather was one of the biggest orchestra instructors in&nbsp;Indonesia. I think music just grew naturally in me as I grew&nbsp;up. In school, I was active in bands, talent shows, and basically&nbsp;anything that revolved around music and performing. DAN: As for me, I just wanted to join the hype. I saw him&nbsp;perform live a few times when I was still in school, and one&nbsp;day I told him, &ldquo;I want to perform with you.&rdquo; I didn&rsquo;t know&nbsp;how to play the guitar at that time, so he taught me all the&nbsp;basics. After that, we started performing at schools together. LOH: You and Iqie have been friends since you were little, Iskandar? ISKANDAR: Yes! We&rsquo;re family friends, and I&rsquo;ve known him since&nbsp;I was a kid. There was a period when we grew apart because&nbsp;of school; we went to different schools. We reconnected only&nbsp;after we finished school. LOH: And how do you get to know Iskandar, Dan? DAN: I had a friend who knew Iskandar, and he introduced us.&nbsp;We started hanging out, and at one point I mentioned Iqie to&nbsp;Iskandar, saying that I knew him too. And the rest is history. LOH: What a small world? Both of them were saying they were pretty&nbsp;active in musical performances when they were in school. Was it the&nbsp;same to you too? ISKANDAR: In school, I did a lot of arts performances, like dancing&nbsp;and acting. I joined a few plays and singing competitions. I think&nbsp;I&rsquo;ve always just enjoyed performing in front of an audience.

LOH: When did you first start to pick up music? DAN: I started learning music when I was 18. When we formed&nbsp;the band, that&rsquo;s when I began learning to play guitar. It&rsquo;s the&nbsp;same for you, right, Iskandar? ISKANDAR: For bass, yes. I only started playing it when we&nbsp;formed the band when I was 18. Before that, I had played other&nbsp;instruments like guitar, violin, and drums back in school. LOH: Growing up, what kind of music do you listen to? IQIE: I listened to everything. Really all kinds of genres. For me,&nbsp;the heavyweights were definitely Y2K-era hits. I also listened&nbsp;to a lot of punk rock, like Green Day, Fall Out Boy, The All-American Rejects, and more. I was into heavy metal too. In&nbsp;school, I joined a heavy metal band, and we basically covered&nbsp;all the songs by Metallica. LOH: And the teachers allowed that? IQIE: Well, that&rsquo;s the fun part of being in school, I guess.&nbsp;Breaking the rules [laughs]. LOH: What about you, Dan? DAN: I&rsquo;d say pretty much the same but no metal songs for me. LOH: So, how did you cope with Iqie when he was jamming metal songs&nbsp;in school? DAN: I just went somewhere else [laughs]. My limit was rock and&nbsp;maybe a bit of punk rock. Honestly, I&rsquo;m glad that era finally&nbsp;ended for him (Iqie) [laughs]. IQIE: I was the one in my band who sometimes suggested we try&nbsp;more pop songs, but the answer was always, &ldquo;No, bro.&rdquo; We&rsquo;re&nbsp;doing metal only, bro.&rdquo; [laughs] I think that&rsquo;s what I like about&nbsp;music today; it&rsquo;s more universal. Everyone listens to everything&nbsp;and jams to it. People are becoming more experimental, and&nbsp;I think that&rsquo;s important because it shows a willingness to try&nbsp;new things, be innovative, and push forward creatively. LOH: I agree. I&rsquo;ve always wondered, what was the name you had before&nbsp;you settled on INSOMNIACKS? DAN: It was Dan&rsquo;s Band, literally my name. So, it was basically&nbsp;like &ldquo;my band&rdquo; [laughs]. Then we realised it was a bit cringey. IQIE: It was a bit of a rushed situation at the time because we&nbsp;were about to perform at a small local music festival, and the&nbsp;organiser kept asking for our band's name. We still had no&nbsp;idea what to call ourselves. We almost went with Dan&rsquo;s Band,&nbsp;but some of us thought that might be a bad idea [laughs]. LOH: I&rsquo;d say it&rsquo;s not that bad, but Dan&rsquo;s right. It does sound a&nbsp;bit cringe [laughs]. I mean, hardly any band would actually call&nbsp;themselves &ldquo;a band.&rdquo; IQIE: Exactly. It sounds like a parody. LOH: For real [laughs]. So, looking at how far you&rsquo;ve come, from&nbsp;performing on small stages to sold out concert in Malaysia and&nbsp;Singapore, how does that make you feel? IQIE: We know we still have a lot to learn, and every day we&rsquo;re&nbsp;still learning about music, sound, and vocals. We set achievable&nbsp;goals each year, and so far, we&rsquo;re on track. This year, we&rsquo;re&nbsp;pushing ourselves even further, doubling or even tripling our&nbsp;efforts. We&rsquo;re grateful for all the support we&rsquo;ve received since&nbsp;day one, and we couldn&rsquo;t be happier. LOH: The resilience of INSOMNIACKS is undeniable. I remember&nbsp;reading about how you put together your single, Pulang, how it was&nbsp;initially rejected by your previous music label, and how much effort you&nbsp;had to put in to prove them wrong, with Pulang eventually becoming&nbsp;one of INSOMNIACKS&rsquo;s biggest hits. IQIE: We believe in all of our songs, but I think part of the reason&nbsp;Pulang was initially rejected was that we were still new to the&nbsp;music scene. Many might have thought our sound didn&rsquo;t meet&nbsp;the industry&rsquo;s standards or align with the label&rsquo;s direction.&nbsp;I&rsquo;m not saying what we did was perfect, but we&rsquo;ve always&nbsp;been clear about our musical direction from the start. Are&nbsp;we rebellious? Yes, but for&nbsp;all the right reasons. We felt&nbsp;Pulang represented everything&nbsp;about us, and we literally had&nbsp;to beg our label to reconsider&nbsp;the song. We even told them&nbsp;we&rsquo;d follow whatever direction&nbsp;they suggested if it didn&rsquo;t work out. In the end, Pulang became&nbsp;a major hit both locally and internationally. Since then, our&nbsp;label has trusted us more and, I&rsquo;d say, shown much more&nbsp;respect for our decisions.

&ldquo;We want our listeners to&nbsp;dive into the music and have&nbsp;the space to decide what the&nbsp;song means to them...We feel like our songs aren&rsquo;t&nbsp;just our stories, they&rsquo;re&nbsp;everyone's stories."

LOH: Do you have any idea why they said no to "Pulang" in the beginning? DAN: They weren&rsquo;t entirely wrong. Our sound was very different&nbsp;from what was popular in Malaysia at the time, which was&nbsp;mostly ballads. Pulang is soft pop with folk-driven elements,&nbsp;and back then, that wasn&rsquo;t mainstream in the local music scene. LOH: That&rsquo;s exactly what your fans love about you, the sense of rebellion&nbsp;and innovation you&rsquo;ve brought to the local music scene. My next&nbsp;question is: does it put pressure on you to create new music, knowing&nbsp;your sound is always different from everyone else&rsquo;s? DAN: We try not to follow trends because, to me, what&rsquo;s more&nbsp;important than creating a new sound is finding the relatability&nbsp;of your voice, music, and message to your audience. We always&nbsp;understand our DNA and our sound, and we trust that our&nbsp;music connects with how our fans are feeling and what they&rsquo;re&nbsp;looking for in the moment. Many people try to pin down our&nbsp;genre, but we don&rsquo;t have a definite label, and that&rsquo;s okay. LOH: You&rsquo;ve got a point. I think being adaptive is crucial nowadays,&nbsp;especially in music. With the fast-paced lifestyle we all have, people are&nbsp;constantly looking for something new to listen to, watch, taste, and feel. DAN: Correct. I feel like we&rsquo;re kind of lose a lot of opportunities if we choose to stick to the status quo. LOH: I&rsquo;m curious, which part of your journey do you feel formative? ISKANDAR: The formative part of our journey was when we&nbsp;started the band and were making many YouTube videos,&nbsp;covering songs from different bands and singers, trying to&nbsp;find the sound that truly spoke to us. During that period, we&nbsp;experimented with our voices, vocal arrangements, beats, and&nbsp;everything else to find the perfect balance, and we succeeded.&nbsp;From that point, we developed our platform and remained&nbsp;faithful to our core values. Putting all of the pieces together,&nbsp;not just the music, but the videos, editing, and performing in&nbsp;front of the camera felt really formative for us. LOH: Basslines often sit quietly in the background, but they shape a&nbsp;song&rsquo;s mood in powerful ways. How do you approach creating parts&nbsp;that serve the song without stealing the spotlight? ISKANDAR: To me, bass functions as the foundational bridge between&nbsp;rhythm and harmony. It provides a deep, resonant layer that&rsquo;s&nbsp;often felt more than heard. I see my role as the glue that holds the&nbsp;musical ensemble together. I work closely with our drummer and,&nbsp;of course, the rest of the band to harmonise the music. LOH: Dan, as a guitarist, how important is the connection between you, your guitar, the music, and the&nbsp;audience while performing? How&nbsp;did you build that relationship? DAN: It took me a long time to really connect with what I&nbsp;was playing. Part of the reason&nbsp;is that I started late. During&nbsp;my initial years, I played the&nbsp;guitar in a robotic manner. I&nbsp;just memorised the notes, hand positions, and gestures. On&nbsp;stage, I&rsquo;d just perform exactly as we practiced, focusing on not&nbsp;messing up the keys. Sometimes, I didn&rsquo;t even know what I was&nbsp;playing because I was too focused on memorising every move&nbsp;and avoiding mistakes. The more I practiced and performed live, the more my&nbsp;confidence grew. I&rsquo;d say it was only about two years ago that I&nbsp;truly felt connected to what I was playing. That&rsquo;s when I could&nbsp;ignore all the technical parts and just enjoy interacting with&nbsp;the audience while performing. That connection is vital; it&nbsp;makes the music feel alive and connected.

&ldquo;MANIACKS, in particular, have&nbsp;been incredibly respectful and&nbsp;supportive, and we cherish&nbsp;them every day.&rdquo;

LOH: Would you say you&rsquo;re more yourself now compared to when you first started in music? DAN: I would say yes. Back then, I was more concerned with all&nbsp;the technicalities of playing guitar; I needed to get every note&nbsp;right and hit every move at the exact moment. Like I said, I&nbsp;felt like a living robot following a set programme. Honestly, I&nbsp;used to hate going on stage; it scared me for various reasons.&nbsp;But the journey we&rsquo;ve been on in music really helped me build&nbsp;trust in myself, in my band, and in our music. Stage fright is&nbsp;still there, of course, but a lot less. Now, I feel more alive and&nbsp;enjoy being with the crowd. I know what I play and why I play&nbsp;it, and I don&rsquo;t worry about making mistakes because that&rsquo;s all&nbsp;part of the experience and the performance. ISKANDAR: We also trust each other more now than when we started. We can count on each other if someone makes a&nbsp;mistake on stage, and we sometimes make it fun. LOH: I love the dynamic you guys have. It really sounds like a&nbsp;brotherhood. As your confidence has evolved, and your dynamic has&nbsp;grown, do you see your music evolving as well? ISKANDAR: I feel like we have our signature sound and lyrics.&nbsp;When you hear a song, you can instantly recognise it as&nbsp;INSOMNIACKS. We always have our own distinctive way of&nbsp;telling stories through our music. In terms of evolution, we&rsquo;re&nbsp;always looking to expand and improve our musical vocabulary,&nbsp;but we do it in a very INSOMNIACKS way &mdash; unique, poetic,&nbsp;and relatable at the same time. DAN: I think in that sense, we&rsquo;re more confident in ourselves&nbsp;now. The reason we haven&rsquo;t strayed from our direction since&nbsp;day one is that we stay focused on what we want to deliver.&nbsp;We listen to ourselves rather than letting others dictate what&nbsp;we should do. We don't live in a bubble; we consider tweaks to&nbsp;fit the current music era, but never in a way that compromises&nbsp;what we believe is INSOMNIACKS, especially the lyrics. LOH Lyrics play a huge role in your songs. Do they all come from your&nbsp;own experiences, or are they fictional? ISKANDAR: They&rsquo;re mainly from our experiences. But sometimes&nbsp;we layer in fictional elements to make the story feel more&nbsp;dramatic, especially when we visualise it in music videos. We&nbsp;also like our lyrics to be open-ended, rather than feeding our&nbsp;listeners everything we have in mind. We want them to be&nbsp;involved in the narrative as well. LOH: But how do you find the balance of making it experimental yet&nbsp;commercial at the same time? ISKANDAR: I believe the essential aspect is to ensure that the song&nbsp;does not come across as overly awkward or insincere, if that&nbsp;makes sense, by avoiding overexertion or attempting to include&nbsp;too much within three and a half minutes. That&rsquo;s why we like&nbsp;our lyrics to be open-ended and open to interpretation. We&nbsp;want our listeners to dive into the music and have the space&nbsp;to decide what the song means to them. We can tell you what&nbsp;a song is about, but that doesn&rsquo;t mean your interpretation&nbsp;is wrong. I feel like our songs aren&rsquo;t just our stories; they&rsquo;re&nbsp;everyone&rsquo;s stories. LOH: Do you think your background in theatre has helped you in the&nbsp;matter of delivering emotions in your songs? ISKANDAR: It helped me a lot with performing, especially with&nbsp;stage presence. I try to channel emotions when we write songs&nbsp;because I feel like musical theatre is a great example of how&nbsp;music can really play with someone&rsquo;s feelings while delivering&nbsp;powerful messages. Another part of theatre is that it teaches&nbsp;you discipline and how to trust the process. It also helps me&nbsp;understand how to navigate working in a group. LOH: That&rsquo;s fantastic. I wonder if you everyone in the band is pulling&nbsp;tricks from each other? DAN: I feel like everyone picks up on things when someone&nbsp;thinks it&rsquo;s cool [laughs]. For example, there was this one move&nbsp;where I&rsquo;d throw a kick in the air at a particular note in a song, and next thing we knew, Iqie was doing the same thing. Then&nbsp;everyone started copying the exact same move.

ISKANDAR: I think we&rsquo;re always learning from each other. We want to grow together and never outshine each other more&nbsp;than necessary. We&rsquo;re transparent with one another and always&nbsp;take everyone&rsquo;s opinions into account during discussions. Like&nbsp;you said earlier, it really feels like a brotherhood. LOH: Earlier, we talked about evolution as a band, and now I want&nbsp;to shift to the evolution of the music industry today. Back then,&nbsp;being a singer meant you were purely a singer. However, in today&rsquo;s&nbsp;world, industry and economic demands require you to assume&nbsp;multiple roles, and INSOMNIACKS is no exception. How do you feel about it? IQIE: Prioritising what matters most is crucial. For me, and&nbsp;I believe for all of us at INSOMNIACKS, making music&nbsp;is always our main focus. Of course, we have other tasks&nbsp;we&rsquo;ve signed up for or are obliged to do, but we constantly&nbsp;remind ourselves why we started this band and why we keep&nbsp;going. We also deeply appreciate the entire team who've&nbsp;been putting in their best to keep us on the right path since&nbsp;day one. LOH: When face with disagreements, how do you find the middle ground? IQIE: We&rsquo;re grateful to be working with a team of professional&nbsp;adults. I think it can sometimes be tricky to work with friends&nbsp;you&rsquo;ve known since childhood; especially when you need to be&nbsp;upfront about certain things, it can feel a bit uncomfortable.&nbsp;For INSOMNIACKS, we&rsquo;ve made it clear that transparency&nbsp;and honesty are essential in everything we do. ISKANDAR: I also feel that we&rsquo;re pretty easygoing, and we take&nbsp;every opinion into consideration. If we disagree, we listen and&nbsp;work together to make the best decision for everyone. DAN: Over time, we&rsquo;ve learned how to compromise. I think&nbsp;that&rsquo;s one of the most important aspects of working in a group:&nbsp;always taking each member&rsquo;s opinion into account. LOH: Is it the same when it comes to writing lyrics? How do you&nbsp;combine the ideas of all three of you into a single song? DAN: Yes, everyone has a say and contributes ideas, but like&nbsp;Iskandar said, we consider every opinion. We work together&nbsp;to find the right words, melody, and rhymes to match the&nbsp;mood and vibe we&rsquo;re aiming for. The process can be tedious,&nbsp;but rest assured, we&rsquo;re creating something that truly represents&nbsp;INSOMNIACKS. LOH: That&rsquo;s beautiful. Iqie, as the main vocalist of the band, how is it&nbsp;for you to constantly perform lyrics out loud about experiences you&rsquo;ve&nbsp;had? Does it ever get too emotional? IQIE: Honestly, I&rsquo;m pretty nonchalant about it sometimes&nbsp;[laughs]. You know, stuff happens, so you just move on. But&nbsp;there&rsquo;s this one song we performed at our first concert, called&nbsp;Teman. It&rsquo;s about our friendships, and they played a video of&nbsp;our fans sharing how the song resonates with their lives. There&nbsp;were also clips from our team, our families, and more. It got&nbsp;me really emotional, and I think the rest of the band too; we couldn&rsquo;t stop ourselves from crying.

LOH: You cried too, Dan? DAN: Yeah, me too [laughs]. LOH: What do you think is the strength of the local music scene today? IQIE: To me, people today aren&rsquo;t afraid to put themselves out&nbsp;there. In the past, with less visibility and a different social&nbsp;media landscape, we often doubted whether we were doing&nbsp;things right or if it felt like too much. Now, everyone is louder&nbsp;in showing their talents online, and I think that&rsquo;s something&nbsp;to celebrate. People are becoming more creative. LOH: And what about the challenges? DAN: I&rsquo;d say the support system. Iqie is right; it's good that&nbsp;people are more daring, but it can get oversaturated, and you&nbsp;don&rsquo;t know who to focus on when everyone is doing the same&nbsp;thing. Finding your true tone is a real challenge because you&nbsp;don&rsquo;t want to just copy what&rsquo;s already been done. IQIE: Exactly. Some people might say Person A is copying&nbsp;Person B, or that Person C lacks originality and sounds similar&nbsp;to Person D. So finding your sound can be tough. But the key&nbsp;is to keep trying and never back down. LOH: What do you say about the support system that you have now,&nbsp;especially from MANIACKS? IQIE: We&rsquo;re really lucky to have such a strong support system,&nbsp;even before we were signed to a label. MANIACKS, in&nbsp;particular, have been incredibly respectful and supportive,&nbsp;and we cherish them every day. They&rsquo;ve been by our side&nbsp;since day one, and we&rsquo;re proud to see the community grow, bringing together people from different backgrounds, races,&nbsp;genders, and cultures. They&rsquo;re a big part of why we keep&nbsp;going and stay motivated.

LOH: That&rsquo;s beautiful. Looking at where INSOMNIACKS has positioned itself in the music scene today, it&rsquo;s really impressive. For new bands trying&nbsp;to make their mark in the industry, what do you think they should learn&nbsp;from you, not from your successes, but from your mistakes? ISKANDAR: That&rsquo;s a good one. Mistakes? Hmm... I can&rsquo;t think&nbsp;of one. IQIE: Me too. Maybe the biggest lesson is not letting negativity&nbsp;take over within your group. When you&rsquo;re in a band, you&nbsp;need to compromise, but at the same time, you also need&nbsp;to know what works for the band and for yourself. This is a&nbsp;long-term commitment, and you don&rsquo;t want to drain yourself&nbsp;with unnecessary negativity, especially when it&rsquo;s coming from&nbsp;within the group. DAN: I&rsquo;d add that it&rsquo;s okay to let things go sometimes, especially&nbsp;if something is really complicated or not worth fighting over. LOH: You&rsquo;re right. You need to enjoy your work to make it meaningful,&nbsp;as it's your job. If you can't find that joy, you need to determine how to&nbsp;achieve it; if it truly isn't there, it's best to let the job go. IQIE: You&rsquo;re right. LOH: Back to your music, what can we expect from your upcoming album? IQIE: There&rsquo;s not much we can disclose yet, but what we can say is&nbsp;that it&rsquo;s going to capture the true sound of INSOMNIACKS. ISKANDAR: It&rsquo;s the first time we&rsquo;re putting together a cohesive&nbsp;collection of our music, so we really need to be extra careful in&nbsp;curating the flow of the album. LOH: Not even a rough idea of when we can expect it? DAN: Sometime this year [laughs]. LOH: My final question for all of you, do you have any questions you&rsquo;d&nbsp;like to ask each other? IQIE: We&rsquo;ve known each other for a long, long time. I think we&nbsp;basically knew every inch of everyone by now [laugh]. ISKANDAR: Are we going to be friends forever? IQIE: Shut up. DAN: Eh, do you have a girlfriend or not? ISKANDAR: Do you want the real answer or the wrong&nbsp;answer? [laughs]. LOH: I will definitely get back to that question in our future interview.&nbsp;Thank you gentlemen, it&rsquo;s been a pleasure talking to you.
