The BMW i4 eDrive35 has officially landed in Malaysia, and it is making a compelling case for why your first (or next) EV should still feel like a “real” car. While the flagship M50 variant grabs the headlines with its face-melting acceleration, the eDrive35 is the sensible, yet stylish, sibling that balances luxury and efficiency without the RM400,000+ price tag. From the outside, it would be difficult to distinguish the vehicle as a "base" model. In Malaysia, the i4 eDrive35 often comes dressed in the M Sport package, giving it an aggressive stance, 19-inch aerodynamic wheels, and those iconic, sharp LED headlights. It retains the polarising vertical kidney grille, which, let’s be honest, looks much better in person, as well as the sleek fastback roofline, which makes it one of the most aerodynamic cars in its class.

Step inside, and you are met with the BMW Curved Display, a massive, seamless piece of glass that houses a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment screen. The materials are top-tier, featuring Sensatec perforated upholstery and high-quality trims like oak grain or aluminium rhombic. While the rear headroom is slightly snug due to that sloping roofline, the “Gran Coupé” four-door layout makes it far more practical for families than a traditional coupé. Plus, the liftback tailgate opens to a generous 470-litre boot, perfect for those weekend golf trips or IKEA runs. Don’t let the “entry-level” badge fool you. The eDrive35 is rear-wheel drive, featuring a single motor that pushes out 286 hp and 400 Nm of torque with a 6.0-second pickup from 0 to 100 km/h. On Malaysian roads, the power delivery is instantaneous. Whether you’re merging onto the LDP or overtaking on the North-South Motorway, the torque hits immediately without the lag of a combustion engine. Since it is a rear-wheel drive, the car retains that signature BMW “point-and-shoot” agility, feeling planted and composed even in tight corners.&nbsp;

One of the biggest concerns for Malaysian buyers is the tropical heat. The i4 eDrive35 uses a 70.3 kWh battery (approximately 67 kWh usable), providing a range of up to 483 km. In local conditions, expect a real-world range of 350 to 400 km, more than enough for a week of commuting in KL. BMW Malaysia offers an 8-year or 160,000 km battery warranty, guaranteeing the battery stays above 70% capacity. Furthermore, BMW is also providing some extra TLC to ensure the longevity of the cells, including an active liquid system to protect the battery during DC fast charging as well as fast charging of up to 180 kW through DC charging that takes you from 10% to 80% in just 32 minutes at a highway ultra-fast charger.

Moving on to the entertainment department, the BMW iDrive 8.5 system is the star of the show. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which look stunning on the wide display. The “BMW IconicSounds Electric”, composed by legendary film composer Hans Zimmer, adds a futuristic hum to the cabin that changes based on your driving mode, making the “silent” EV experience feel surprisingly soulful.
