Seiko's constant dedication to innovation in technology, features and designs since the debut of their first diver's watch in 1965 has contributed to its popularity. Notably, the brand's recent introduction of the Seiko 5 Sports GMT, an affordable mechanical GMT watch, has generated significant attention and accessibility for a broader audience. It now unveils an exciting addition to its esteemed 6R family, showcasing a GMT function and an impressive 72-hour power reserve. The latest movement, the Caliber 6R54, powers these three unique Prospex creations, all offering modern reinterpretations of a revered Seiko classic from 1968. The collection comprises two standard-production Prospex models and a limited-edition variant featured in Seiko's distinguished Save the Ocean series.

The three distinct models are the SPB381 in green, the SPB383 in black, and the SPB385 limited edition Save the Ocean model, characterised by a captivating ice-blue dial inspired by polar glaciers. These models feature stainless steel cases with a durable super-hard coating, drawing inspiration from Seiko's iconic 1968 Diver design. The watches possess a diameter of 42 mm and a thickness of 12.9 mm. Noteworthy about the new Seiko 1968 Diver's Modern Re-Interpretation GMT is that it features a wider bezel and a smaller crystal diameter compared to the brand's contemporary dive watches. This design choice imbues the timepiece with a touch of vintage elegance.
These watches boast the convenience of adjusting the GMT hand independently, allowing users to effortlessly keep track of a second-time zone. They also demonstrate exceptional performance with a water resistance of up to 200 m and Lumibrite hands and markers that enhance visibility in low-light environments. Additionally, their unidirectional bezel includes a luminous pip for added convenience. Complementing their functionality, each watch features a slim three-link stainless steel bracelet, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit on the wrist.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, these watches employ sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, besides having a uni-directional rotating timing bezel with a ceramic insert showcasing a 60-minute elapsed time scale. The reverse side of the case showcases a secure and solid screw-down stainless-steel case back. A unique characteristic of these sport-oriented models is the presence of an unsigned screw-down crown positioned just above the 4 o'clock position. It is important to note that while the new Seiko 1968 Diver's Modern Re-Interpretation GMT models offer GMT functionality, they remain certified as ISO-compliant dive watches. Their 60-minute timing bezels are distinct from 24-hour GMT bezels, and boast an impressive water resistance rating of 200 m. Hence, despite their GMT capabilities, these timepieces retain their primary purpose as exceptional dive watches with the added GMT functionality.

Have you always wanted to be a swimmer?
To be honest, no. I started swimming as a way to deal with my asthma troubles. But it took about a year of learning to swim before I started enjoying the sport. Once I became comfortable with it, I decided to pursue it competitively.

How did your first-ever swimming competition go?
Oh, it was quite an experience! I was just 11 years old when I competed in the Sarawak President&rsquo;s Cup in Bintulu. To my surprise, I ended up winning several silver medals and even a gold medal. It was truly unbelievable, especially considering it was my very first competition ever.

And look at you now, a two-time Olympian. How does that you feel?
I am immensely thankful to everyone who has believed in me and supported me along the way. Without their unwavering support, I couldn't have achieved what I have. It's truly been a team effort, and I owe my success to all those who have stood by my side.

It seems like you have a strong mindset when it comes to performance. How do you stay so positive?
I've always been a naturally positive person, and that mindset helps me. Being able to stay positive and focused allows me to give my best in every situation. It's all about channelling that positive energy and using it to fuel my performance.

Preparation is key for any athlete before a big competition. How do you usually prepare yourself the night before?
Ah, the night before a competition is crucial for me. I prioritise both my diet and getting a good night's sleep. I make sure to focus on maintaining a healthy diet and having quality sleep for about a week leading up to the competition. It's not just about being mentally prepared but also being physically ready. I want my body to have enough time to recover and be in the best possible shape to give my all and conquer the competition.

Maintaining physical fitness is indeed crucial for an athlete. Can you share your workout routine with us?&nbsp;
Absolutely! My workout routine consists of a combination of land exercises and swimming training. After my afternoon swimming session, I focus on land exercises that primarily target my core strength, mobility and bodyweight workouts. Additionally, I hit the gym three times a week for weightlifting and powerlifting exercises. However, swim training remains the primary focus for me as a swimmer. I spend the majority of my training time in the water, dedicating nine sessions per week with each session lasting around two hours.

What does time management look like for Welson Sim?
I must admit that time management has been a challenging skill to master for me, but I always strive to give my best in this aspect. A typical day for me starts by waking up at 6 AM to get ready for my 6:30 AM training session. After the training, I have breakfast at around 9 AM. Once I get home, I take a nap to rest and recharge. Around 12:30 PM, I have lunch to fuel my body. In the afternoon, I head back to the pool at 3:30 PM for my second training session of the day. By 7 PM, I return home for dinner. To ensure I get enough rest, I try to go to bed early, aiming to be asleep before 11 PM. Managing my time effectively allows me to balance my training and personal life efficiently.

And does wearing a watch help to keep yourself on track?
Certainly! With a watch on my wrist, I can easily keep track of time during my activities. It helps me stay on schedule for events, training sessions, or competitions. Instead of reaching for my phone or relying on other devices, I can quickly check the time right on my wrist. It's convenient and keeps me focused on my activity without any interruptions.

So, besides just telling time, do you think there are other advantages to wearing a watch?&nbsp;
One notable benefit is durability and water resistance. Some watches are specifically designed to be tough and to withstand the demands of outdoor activities. They're built to be rugged, making them capable of enduring rough conditions. Plus, they're often water-resistant or even waterproof, so you can confidently wear them while swimming, diving, or participating in water sports without having to worry about any damage.

Speaking of watches, do you think they contribute to one's sense of style or fashion?&nbsp;
Very much! Wearing a watch can have a significant impact on your overall style and fashion. It serves as a statement piece, becoming a focal point of your outfit. A well-chosen watch adds a touch of sophistication, elegance, or even uniqueness to your look. Whether you prefer a classic and minimalist design or a bold and avant-garde timepiece, the watch you wear can express your individuality and enhance your personal style. It's a subtle yet powerful accessory that can elevate your fashion game and make a lasting impression.

It's wonderful to have someone who supports you unconditionally. Who has been your biggest supporter in this industry?
Without a doubt, my mother has been my number one supporter throughout my swimming journey. Especially during the early years, she was always there for me, accompanying me to training sessions even at the crack of dawn, sometimes as early as 5 AM. Her dedication and unwavering support were crucial in helping me pursue my swimming career. Even after I moved to KL, she made sure to attend every one of my competitions, both locally and internationally. Knowing that she was there, cheering me on, gave me the strength and motivation to push myself further in my swimming career. I am truly grateful for her endless support and encouragement.

What are your future plans in terms of your life and sporting career?
Right now, my main goal is to unlock Paris Olympics 2024. I am focused on pushing myself to new heights and striving to qualify for the Olympics. It's an exciting journey ahead, filled with dedication, hard work and determination to make my mark on the biggest stage in sports. Beyond that, I will continue to pursue my passion for swimming, constantly seeking new opportunities to improve and achieve even greater success in the sporting world.
