Mimi Fly opens up about ambition, rejection, falling in public and finding her own way forward.&nbsp;

Traffic in Kuala Lumpur is a notoriously soul-crashing affair, but when you&rsquo;re blasting Mimi Fly&rsquo;s upbeat pop anthem Angkat with a fashion stylist, a one-hour gridlock to Petaling Jaya miraculously feels like twenty minutes. We were trapped in a car, sure, but we were also violently nodding to the electrifying bass and attempting highly uncoordinated head twirls to her melodic vocals. Just 24 hours prior, the singer-songwriter was commanding the stage in Manila at the ASEAN-Korea Music Festival ROUND 2026. Dressed in a striking, all-white custom BEHATI suit, she was tearing through her hits,&nbsp;Temberang and Nara, hitting high and low notes with the kind of unstoppable momentum that defines a true pop star. Yet, despite a gruelling travel schedule and a brutal 9 AM call time, she greeted us with the warmest, brightest smile. That is a rare piece of humility from an artist of her calibre. After three hours of cycling through outfits and striking poses alongside her music producer, Bo Amir, nothing became abundantly clear: Mimi Fly possesses an innate, room-shifting warmth. It&rsquo;s the distinct feeling you get being in the same room with an old friend. She commands a space effortlessly, injecting energy and life into the studio without ever crossing the line into exhausting. &ldquo;You see this fierce energy and think she is a woman you do not want to mess with,&rdquo; Bo Amir says with a laugh. &ldquo;Well, the truth is, you don&rsquo;t want to mess with her. That&rsquo;s a fact. But she&rsquo;s also incredibly sweet. She has the kind of soul that instantly puts you at ease.&rdquo;

That duality, the fierce protector and the comforting soul, was forged early on. Growing up as the eldest daughter in a predominantly female household, Mimi carried the heavy mantle of being the ultimate role model: independent, successful and the source of family pride. But by her own admission, she was also a &ldquo;rebellious daughter.&rdquo; In her household, education was paramount. Mimi balanced a deep love for science with an equally consuming passion for music and art, but destiny ultimately forced her hand. On the exact day she was supposed to pack her bags for a prestigious university in the UK, she made a detour. Instead of boarding a flight to Belfast, she found herself at an audition for a local singing competition with her crew, One Nation Emcees. To say her mother was furious would be a massive understatement. The decision sparked a bitter family feud. For most teenagers, that kind of emotional fallout would cause a total derailment, but for Mimi, it became high-octane fuel. She channelled the friction into her craft, pushing her bandmates, Kozae, Zydee, and Jojoe to their absolute limits. The gamble paid off. One Nation Emcess took the crown, becoming the champions of Gang Starz 2008, and cementing the arrival of a major talent who has been doing things entirely on her own terms ever since. And just like that, the Mimi Fly era officially began. Suddenly, One Nation Emcees was everywhere, and Mimi was the undisputed &ldquo;cool girl&rdquo; of the Malaysian music scene. With her signature fiery red hair, effortless choreography, and a disarming, friendly smile that cut through the usual industry pretension, she was having the time of her life. But in showbiz, the spotlight is a rental, not a purchase. Eventually, the house lights dimmed, the curtain calls were made, and the cast had to retreat backstage. &ldquo;We had a good run,&rdquo; Mimi says, looking back. Determined to stand on her own two feet, she chose to ride solo, convinced that the world still held vast opportunities for her. But timing is a cruel master. Just as she was gearing up for her solo debut, the world ground to a halt. COVID hit, the industry shut down, and Mimi found herself retreating to her roots in Semenyih.

What followed was a mandatory hard reset, a change to rebuild, fix what was broken, and simply breathe. She threw herself into fitness, took up dance classes, and mastered yoga so thoroughly she became a certified instructor. Her body was constantly moving, but this time, strictly to her own rhythm. For four years, the hiatus served as a sanctuary. It allowed her to touch base with her own humanity and live a life unburdened by the expectations of fame. Honestly, she could have stayed in that peaceful obscurity forever. If only music were not so deeply hardwired into her DNA. &ldquo;On my birthday, I asked myself: What is the one thing that if I don&rsquo;t do, I will regret for the rest of my life?&rdquo; Mimi recalls. &ldquo;I closed my eyes, and I saw myself. I was in the studio, making music, writing, just being entirely free. Dancing, performing on stage, with the crowd shouting my name. I opened my eyes and just started to cry. I thought I had left that life behind and was ready to move on but deep down, I missed it. I had just been denying it for four years.&rdquo; It was not that she had not tried during her hiatus. Mimi had occasionally sat down to write, but the pages remained stubbornly blank. Perhaps, at the time, life simply demanded to be lived first. She had been ready to say goodbye to the industry, but music was never just a career for Mimi; it was&nbsp; &nbsp; more of a calling. With nothing but her own savings and renewed sense of purpose, she decided to bet on herself again. &ldquo;I went back to the studio and said to myself, here we go again,&rdquo; she shares. &ldquo;I made a plan to be a composer again, a lyricist, to find a producer. To just release everything I was feeling.&rdquo; This time, however, she was entirely on her own. No band, no safety net. But destiny has a funny way of aligning when you commit to the bit. Enter Bo Amir, a producer Mimi now describes as &ldquo;the best producer I have ever met, and someone I&rsquo;m proud to call my best friend.&rdquo; The feeling, it turns out, was entirely mutual. &ldquo;I was looking for someone to make music with at the time. I guess you could say we were destined to work together,&rdquo; Bo says. &ldquo;I first saw her perform back in 2012, and I was completely blown away by her energy and vocal range. I have wanted to work with Mimi for over a decade, but the opportunity just never aligned until 2024.&rdquo; Known for his funky twist and electrifying blends of pop, R&amp;B, and hip-hop, Bo proved to be the missing puzzle piece. He brought the sonic blueprint, and Mimi brought the fire. Together, they forged her comeback anthem, Angkat. &ldquo;He presented me with that sound,&rdquo; Mimi says, a spark in her eye, &ldquo;and I instantly told him. This is it. This is the sound.&rdquo;&nbsp;

This time around, Mimi is running the show. Moving entirely as an independent artist, she has seized absolute creative control and overseen everything from the sonic architecture and fashion direction to the overarching visual narrative. &ldquo;The moment I heard the beat, I could visualise the colours, the choreography, the music video, the stage concept, basically the entire story I wanted to tell,&rdquo; Mimi muses. But bringing a vision this massive to life requires more than just one person&rsquo;s hands. To execute it, Mimi rallied her inner circle. &ldquo;I called one of my closest friends, who also happens to be the main choreographer for all my videos and stage performances, to help put together the dancers and the wardrobe,&rdquo; she shares. &ldquo;We designed the choreography together. We even went to Jakel, bought the fabric, and made our own costumes for the music video.&rdquo; It is clear that Mimi poured her entire soul into this comeback, all while deliberately keeping it completely under the radar. In the digital era where artists thirst for pre-release publicity and endless teasers to keep fans hooked, Mimi chose total radio silence. &ldquo;I like to work in anonymity,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;I want to let the work speak for itself.&rdquo; When the track and its accompanying music video finally dropped, the industry was left collectively speechless.&nbsp;Angkat became an instant phenomenon. Even after a minor setback forced them to take down the original video and re-release a new version due to wardrobe complications, the video has already comfortably surpassed 7.8 million views. This is what happens when raw passion meets uncompromising self-belief.

When asked if there was a secret formula to the song&rsquo;s infectious, viral success, Bo Amir downplays the hype. &ldquo;Not at all. In fact, it was never our intention to make a &lsquo;viral&rsquo; song,&rdquo; Bo admits. &ldquo;We just let the art do its job. If it&rsquo;s good, it is good. If it&rsquo;s not, we make something better.&rdquo; That said, Mimi and Bo do credit a high-powered technical setup for allowing their creativity to translate seamlessly on a massive scale. Operating on a Mac Studio M3 Ultra paired with a Studio Display, their workflow remains uninterrupted, which is crucial when capturing lightning in a bottle. &ldquo;I produce and edit everything in Logic Pro, and a massive part of my sound comes from working in Spatial Audio,&rdquo; Mimi explains. &ldquo;It allows me to go beyond traditional left-and-right panning. We build everything in a full 3D space, which gives the music that inherently cinematic, immersive feel.&rdquo; But beyond the top-tier gear, it is Bo&rsquo;s ability to decode Mimi&rsquo;s artistic frequency that makes the partnership work, and according to him, the world has only tasted the first course. &ldquo;I guess no one is ever truly ready for Mimi&rsquo;s ballad songs,&rdquo; he teases, hinting at what is next on the horizon. &ldquo;You might know Mimi for her powerhouse vocals and sharp choreography, but her
