Review: Stretch & Massage therapy at The Stretch Clinic, KL

Assisted strecthing has been a trend across the pond for some time, but the burning question remains: Can stretch therapy truly alleviate your DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)? The Stretch & Message therapy at The Stretch Clinic holds the answer.

If there’s a fitness equivalent to flossing your teeth before bed, it’s stretching. Those muscle-loosening manoeuvres, aimed at boosting flexibility and range of motion, are crucial for peak physical performance, yet for many of us, they’re easily overlooked. Stretching has now firmly earned its spot on the wellness map, rubbing shoulders with breathwork, cold water therapy, and meditation as a go-to panacea for a myriad modern-day maladies.

While we’re all about hitting our 10,000 steps, squeezing in regular weight training sessions, and occasionally attempting that 100 kg deadlift, stretching tends to fall by the wayside. Flexibility and mobility, vital for maintaining muscle health, often take a back seat to quicker workouts or another binge- worthy Disney+ Hotstar series episode.

Research backs up the benefits — stretching helps stave off injuries, reduces muscle soreness and mitigates the risk of muscle imbalances. A University of Porto review of eleven studies highlighted its role in improving joint range of motion, while another reputable source found that a blend of weight training and stretching can alleviate musculoskeletal pain and enhance posture. There are two main types: static stretches, where you hold a position, and dynamic stretches, which involve movement alongside stretching.

Enter The Stretch Clinic. Founder Liam Harkness describes it as a haven offering various services tailored to fit into almost any lifestyle and schedule. Nestled within The Five @ KPD, Malaysia’s inaugural Active Isolated Stretching (AIS) centre is a one-stop shop for massage, physical therapy and, of course, stretching. Staffed by licensed physiotherapists and sports therapists, they cater to everyone from athletes to desk-bound professionals seeking relief from poor posture and mobility issues.

I opted for the Stretch & Massage therapy, which, according to in-house physiotherapist Venetta Devi Ramachandran (or Vee), is “the ultimate treat for busy bees or fitness enthusiasts.” Forty-five minutes of muscle-loosening stretches followed by another 45 minutes of blissful massage promises to banish all aches and pains, leaving you refreshed and rejuvenated.

Walking in feeling under-exercised, overtired and perpetually late, Vee guided me to a serene treatment room adorned only with a plush armchair in one corner. After discussing my specific concerns (wonky knees) and general woes (overwhelming fatigue and a packed schedule), she got to work. She gently manipulated my ankles, calves and thighs, gradually progressing up my body, while simultaneously easing tension from my arms and shoulders. Despite my initial scepticism about paying for something I could do at home, the experience was transformative. The final ten minutes, spent on a custom leather stretching chair, saw Vee elongating and easing my arm, shoulder and chest muscles, leaving me feeling lighter than air.

As I basked in a fleeting but tangible sense of calm, it dawned on me that while The Stretch Clinic’s hands-on treatments, like the Stretch & Message session, are ideal for athletes seeking performance gains and speedy recovery, they’re also a godsend for anyone grappling with life’s daily physical challenges. Whether it’s the strain from schlepping around in ill-fitting shoes or the strain of hoisting a growing toddler without proper form, you don’t need to be a fitness fanatic to reap the rewards of The Stretch Clinic’s offerings.
